Ron started his painting business in 2003. For the next 12 years it was rocky.
There were lots of fuck ups. (his words, not mine)
He did a lot of painting himself, especially in the early days.
Then he started hiring.
Ron told me, “That was tough. Even if you have some good painters the bad ones ruin it.”
For those 12 years, he did between $75,000/year to $240,000/year depending on how many people he had working for him.
This is what Ron told me on the phone… I wrote as he talked.
“If it was just me and a crew we did about $75k. My best year with a couple crews was $240k. In 2012 I had one guy running everything. He was managing everything ... I mean everything.
Office employees, crews, scheduling... everything
I thought I had figured it out. So I stepped away. I wasn’t managing anything.
Then it blew up. I went all the way back to zero. It really messed me up.
For the next 5 years I didn’t know what to do. I thought I could maybe just sell for somebody. Get a good sales job.
I gave up on the painting business.
I was done with painting. Done with service business.
So I bought a BBQ stand. Got out of the service business.
I still did side work. I didn’t ever want to hire people again. I would power wash in summer… paint interior in winter. Just enough to get by.”

Ron knew something had to change though. He was scraping by. He wasn’t loving what he was doing. He told me “my wife didn’t leave me thankfully”. Ron loves his wife. They’ve been together forever.

He saw one of my videos about how to structure this business… the really basic model of marketing, sales, and production.
For Ron, he realized that’s what was missing.
He got his license back. He decided to do this again.
He started all over with a couple of guys who started with him… Some old crews that came back to work with him.
